Staying on Course with C12’s Five-Point Alignment Matrix

A Focus on Ministry

C12 Group has enhanced the balanced scorecard framework to include an emphasis on the critical element of operating a Christian business — ministry. The C12 Five Point Alignment Matrix reinforces the concept that, as followers of Jesus, we must do the hard work of intentionally integrating all aspects of operating a business with our faith. Worship, mission and ministry must flow through every domain of the business, incorporating the centrality of our values, purpose, and vision. Having an eye towards ministry is essential in our calling and eternal impact, and effects our vision, as well as how we prioritize resources. C12’s alignment matrix forces Christian business leaders to examine how each area of our businesses can function harmoniously when we include shared core principles and ministry at the heart of the matrix.

Consider these five elements to the C12 alignment matrix:

Revenue Generation: Includes everything we do to define, understand, attract, retain, communicate, measure, and build on our customer relationships to achieve growth.

Financial Management: Deals with all aspects of our financial strength; assets, profitability, cash flow, funding sources, projections, controls, and reporting.

Operations Management: Details the internal and external supply chain, technical, and administrative processes that produce work and deliver client value.

Ministry: Encompasses activities that serve to spread or support the Kingdom of God as we serve, equip, and encourage our stakeholders in Christ’s love and truth.

Organization Development: Creates team unity and strength by attracting and equipping team members who are talented and motivated to support our core principles. It also encourages a supportive learning environment that relies on innovation and both professional and personal development.

The arrows emanating outward from this hub indicate that our shared purpose, vision, and values guide everything we do (i.e., policies, practices, processes, priorities, decisions, goals). The arrows pointing inward to the center signify the contribution each area makes toward achieving our shared vision God’s way. For an eternally balanced scorecard approach to business stewardship, consider how functionally this paradigm is expressed in your company.

Need help getting the process started?

Set aside some time to focus on these preliminary steps:

  1. Define the specific goals or initiatives in each of the five categories to support the top strategic objectives that came out of earlier planning efforts.
  2. Refine the list of 5-10 business goals by using the matrix in an iterative fashion.
  3. Review each item one at a time through the lens of the other four categories and your core principles to see if it aligns with each of them. This takes significant and thoughtful effort, but it has enormous benefit.

By understanding the cause-and-effect links between elements of the matrix, you’ll be much more likely to produce a harmonious set of objectives and action plans to achieve your vision. Over time, you’ll bring alignment where it matters most: beyond mere temporal issues to infinitely important eternal matters!
